Workers’ Compensation is a system where injured workers can pursue coverage for medical expenses and lost wages after they are injured at work.  Work-related injuries and illnesses ranging from broken bones to spinal cord injuries to cancer can all be covered if your injury happened in the course of your job tasks.

Getting the benefits you deserve, however, is often harder than you might expect.  Insurance carriers are motivated to deny claims, and it can often take a petition before a Workers’ Comp Judge before your benefits are granted or a settlement is reached.

For help getting your claim approved, call the Certified Pennsylvania Workers’ Compensation Lawyers at Cardamone Law today at (267) 651-7945.

Common Workplace Injuries Our Workers’ Comp Lawyers Handle

Injuries across various industries and jobs can vary based on what kinds of activities you perform at work and what kind of risks are present.  However, the following are somewhat common across industries, and they are all the kinds of injuries and conditions our Workers’ Comp attorneys can help you claim compensation for in Abington:

    Back Injuries

Whether you hurt yourself lifting or carrying something or whether you hurt your back in a fall from heights or a slip and fall, back injuries are one of the most common reasons people have to take time away from work.  Workers’ Compensation covers injuries from various sources and causes, including OSHA violations that left the premises where you work unsafe or even injuries caused by accidentally lifting more than you could handle.

    Spinal Injuries

When back injuries are very severe, they often include injury to the spinal cord itself.  This can lead to numbness or pins and needles sensations in moderate cases of impingement or injury and total paralysis and loss of function in more serious cases.  These injuries are more common in falls from heights, vehicle accidents, and more.

    Broken Bones

A broken bone can take you out of work for 4-6 weeks to heal, in many cases.  If your injury is in a weight-bearing location or a part of your body you work heavily at your job, it may take longer before you are ready to return to work.  However, some jobs can be done while you heal.  For example, if you are seated for your job, being in a walking boot for a month with a broken fibula might not be an issue.

    Amputations

Amputation injuries are not likely in every job, but people who work with machinery and power tools often face a risk of amputation.  If you can get the body part reattached, you might be able to get back to your normal life after a healing period, which should have lost wages covered.  If your injury is permanent and it cannot be reattached, then you face permanent harm that can be separately reimbursed regardless of the effect on your income.  However, you may also be granted a healing period, during which time you are not necessarily expected to work.

    Internal Injuries

Falls from heights, auto accidents, and blunt force trauma can cause internal injuries.  These injuries can include broken ribs, punctured lungs, damage to other internal organs, or internal bleeding.  The medical treatment for these injuries will often involve surgery, potentially meaning you will face a few weeks away from work for that recovery alone.  If your injuries are more serious, you may have a long road to recovery, all of which should be covered.

    Tendonitis and Soft Tissue Injuries

Sprains, strains, tendonitis, and other similar injuries can all be quite serious, given that they might permanently restrict what work tasks you can perform.  Some injuries do not easily heal after a recovery period, and returning to repetitive work tasks could reignite repetitive stress injuries, putting you back to square one.  In many of these cases, a true disability results, requiring accommodations that could potentially mean reducing your wages.  Workers’ Comp can help fill in 2/3 of the difference if your wages are reduced for partial disability, at least for 500 weeks.

Medical Care Covered by Workers’ Comp in Abington

When you suffer a work injury, you should be entitled to full payment of all medical expenses related to the injury.  This includes a lot of the coverage you might expect, but it is important to list these coverages out so you can understand just how powerful Workers’ Comp can be:

    Hospital Stays

If you need to go to the hospital for your injuries, Workers’ Comp should cover that.  Whether you need emergency care or weeks of recovery in the hospital, it should all be paid for by your employer’s Workers’ Comp insurance.

    Surgeries

Surgical care should be covered if it is medically necessary.  In the first 90 days of your care, you may have to use a doctor your employer chooses for your surgery, but you can seek a second opinion with a doctor of your choice to confirm whether that is the right course of action for you.

    Medication

Medication such as painkillers, antibiotics, cancer treatments, and other medicines should all be paid for.  There are complications with getting medical marijuana covered, but even these costs can be reimbursed.

    Physical Therapy

Physical therapy and rehabilitation are incredibly common for many work injuries, and these appointments can be covered even after you return to work.

    Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care is sometimes questioned as an alternative therapy, but many injury victims find chiropractor visits incredibly helpful.  These are usually covered when provided by a licensed chiropractor.

    Other Therapies

Plenty of other therapies can also be covered so long as they are recommended by a doctor and carried out by licensed practitioners.  In some cases, even alternative therapies like acupuncture are covered.  If there is ever a question as to whether a therapy is needed, it may go to a doctor and a Workers’ Comp Judge to decide usefulness in a Utilization Review.
